Pride of Agriculture

Calving season around our place is in full swing and what an adventure the last month to month and a half has been. We've had: uncomplicated births, complicated births, twins, calves who almost didn't make it through the below freezing temps and an orphan.  ROLLER COASTER would probably be the best descriptive phrase but at the same time I know what has gone on at our place is the norm for most everyone else in this season of their operation.

It is because of all this, that I wonder about and then become angry at those people who are working against us. By us, I'm referring to every single person involved in the Agriculture industry in some way. As a percentage of population, I know this is a small amount of people who make their living in this industry.  BUT in relation to the number of people who benefit from Agriculture in some way (in case you missed my last post- this is everyone), this is a huge number.

These people who are working against us have never experienced this Roller Coaster. They have no idea about it and to be honest, they don't care about it. They don't get up before the sun to feed and check on livestock. They don't put off dinner until after dark when all the livestock is fed. They've never worried  about the upcoming weather and whether or not this years crop (which will feed many others) will make because of it. They've never cried because they had no other choice but to put an animal down. They've never spent a day in the freezing cold in wet clothes to save a baby calf from freezing. They've never had a sleepless night due to waiting for a mama to give birth, or checking on a sick animal. They've never experience the joy of watching a mama and her little one become familiar with each other or watching that little one nurse for the first time. They've never watched a calf or foal playing in the pasture. They've never experienced a sunset from a pasture surrounded by livestock.

And I'll tell you the biggest thing they've never experienced. That proud feeling of know that you're feeding people all over the world, saving that baby from freezing to death, getting that orphan baby to eat so it can grow up to be strong and healthy, watching the crops grow and the ground change through the seasons. They have never felt nor experienced the PRIDE of being involved in an Industry that is so tight knit and full of salt of the earth people who work everyday to help Feed an Entire World Population--- and LOVE every minute of it!

Is AgVocating for you?!?!?!?!?!

I recently had the privilege of attending the Arkansas Women in Ag conference in North Little Rock and came home with newly acquired knowledge on a variety of topics along with a renewed feeling for the need to AgVocate. Some of you may be wondering what it means to AgVocate..... and as the guest speaker of the conference, Carrie Mess, A.K.A.  Dairy Carrie put it so simply-- it is "Telling your Story" or Advocating for Agriculture.

Carrie truly is an AgVocate for this amazing industry and her whole presentation was to educate all of us on how to educate society and our consumers on OUR practices, OUR processes and OUR stories.... because---If we do not, someone else will.

Ok, so now you are wondering just who that 'someone else' is. This my friends is where things get scary, where we start to see just why those of us in this industry need to learn how to and find our own way to communicate to our consumers. The 'someone else' is typically those people who do not understand our way of life, do not live our way of life and who more than likely think our way of life needs to be dealt with and abolished.

For those of us in the industry we are very aware of who this 'someone else' is... The first two organizations that will pop into our minds are HSUS (Human Society of the United States) and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)..... For those of you unfamiliar with the actual motivation and purpose of these organizations, please do your research. While they advertise their "Love" for 4-legged furry critters---most will be pleasantly surprised that it is a far cry from the "Love" most farmers and ranchers will show for their 4-legged furry critters and their way of life. The "Love" these two groups (and many others like them) portray is nothing more than their way to get YOUR money..... and NO!!!  YOUR money donated to organizations like HSUS will not go to your LOCAL Humane Society.

Back to the conference: After listening to Carrie, along with other presenters (I will be highlighting some of these presentations and speakers in the days to come) through the two day conference... I left that Friday afternoon asking myself just how I was going to tell our story so that the generations after us could carry on in our footsteps and continue to Build a Legacy in our family name.

So here I am today... writing this blog post trying to find my voice in a small knit Agriculture Industry trying to educate and feed an ever growing world population, sharing via social media outlets, Facebook , Twitter and Instragram-- fun but educational blurps from our life with a small commercial cow/calf herd AND AgVocating as a new member of our Team BEEF Arkansas.

Now tell me---
What is your story? Do you raise crops? Cows? Horses? Sheep? Hogs? Chicken? Timber? Participate in a Farmers Market?  Just enjoy the scenery and serenity of living in the country? Enjoy eating a big juicy steak? What about a homemade breakfast wtih a cold glass of milk, bacon, sauage and eggs?

AND

How are you telling it? Blogging? Sharing via social media? Member of Team BEEF? Member of a local organization (Cattlemen, Women in Ag, Farm Bureau, etc)? Talking to consumers at the grocery store?

Don't forget...........if you are talking to someone, anyone, about YOUR industry and YOUR agricultural lifestyle--you are an AgVocate!!!

13.1

Yes.. You read that right, 13.1--miles... Yes miles...  Are you cringing yet? Or itching to lace up your shoes? Me-- I'm still contemplating my answer to that ;)

I started running about 3 years ago and competing in 5k's (3.1 miles).  Last year I stepped it up and completed my first 10k (6.2 miles) and ran my second one a little over a month ago. The adrenaline rush from crossing that finish line and running to beat your own time is amazing.  I have a friend, Dottie, who  got me started running and who runs quite a bit more than I do-- and she has been one of a few who keeps me inspired and motivated to keep pushing myself......

Pushing is exactly what I did this past year. I can officially say that I have ran and completed my first ever half-marathon.... Some may not think much of it but let me just tell you what an accomplishment it feels personally!! Dottie and I have ran the Little Rock 5k together the last 2 years and decided this year we would do the half. 13.1 miles takes preparation, focus, and endurance.. And for this particular race this year-- a raincoat and gloves....

One of which we both forgot in the vehicle as we headed toward the start line!! The race this year was cold with temperatures dropping as the race went on and wet as it drizzled and sprinkled pretty much the whole time.  And the course... I always forget just how tough the courses are in downtown Little Rock...  They will test you physically and mentally.

We ran the first 11 miles with those running the full marathon.... And can I just tell you when I saw the miles 13 sign the only thing I could think was... I am sooooo glad I don't have another 13 to go!! This girl doesn't think she'll ever do anything more than 13.1 but I'm ok with that:)

We had plenty of cheerleaders there that day and had it not been raining they had motivating signs for us too :) Dot told me before we got to the race Sunday morning-- 'you'll feel like a badass when you finish' and let me just tell you 'badass' might have been an understatement!! The theme of this years race was 'Epic' and epic it was!!! Oh and did I mention the medals they give to all finishers?!?! They are massive!!

If you've been thinking of getting started my first piece of advice-- sign yourself up for a 5k! It's the best motivation to get you going and keep you going....

Do you run? Are you thinking of competing in a race? What's the longest distance you've ran?

Any full marathoners out there?!?! Any one compete in any of the Little Rock races this past weekend?

2014 YCLC First Session

The YCLC program (Young Cattlmen's Leadership Class) put on by our State Cattlemen's Association kicked off its 4th year this week.  I'm proud to say that I am one of 22 participants this year. I am proud to be a part of this great program and proud to be part of the biggest class they have had to date. The program is full of information on our Beef Industry. The information ranges from the County level to State level to the National level from legislative issues, family farms, commodities, marketing, telling 'your' Ag story to leadership within the industry.

This first session was spent in Little Rock touring the Department of Ag, Plant Board and State Capitol along with networking opportunities and tons of classroom education. We were introduced to the history of our association, the structure of the Association along with the history and structure of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.

The goal of this program is to get the younger generation of farmers and ranchers involved with the Agricultural Industry. The information within the program as well as the tours that we took are a great reminder that unless you are speaking up and being active in whatever it is you are passionate about, someone else will be and you may not like the decisions they make that ultimately affect you and your operation.

Does your state association have a Young Cattlemen's Association? Are you an alumni in it or interested in being in it? How do you make your voice heard for Agriculture?

Below are pictures from our 1st Session :)

Don't look..... Don't look at how long it's been since my last post. It's Pathetic. Pitiful. Embarrassing. BUT it's LIFE! And life is exactly what has been going on in our neck of the woods. And lots of it.

Our calendar and appointments and other 'things' seem to be never ending and the days getting shorter but still I find myself ready to be back at this blogging deal. Ready to fill your ears with MORE of my rambling and even more of all the randomness that is my (our) life.

So much has changed but also remained the same over the last 2 years....Maybe eventually I'll get around to catching all of you up but for now I'll charge ahead with the current state of Faith, Love and Cattle in my life. All of which are still in full force and growing stronger on a daily basis.

Faith-- This one... WOW... is the only word to describe it... It is the center of everything and seems to have had it's ups and downs but God is good and thus my Faith is there. When I feel myself losing a little Faith in something or someone or some situation one teeny tiny prayer and God reminds me that there is no need to let my Faith waiver because He is there and has everything under control.

Love-- We still got it and it's stronger than ever! I still find myself falling in love everyday with my life and all the bigs and smalls, goods and bads that make it what it is.

Cattle--Those that know me, know this is more than in full force. We've got Momma's on our place that will be giving us baby moo's soon (we're praying that the weather will warm up just a touch soon too) and we just returned from my 1st ever NCBA convention as well as our yearly trip to the Dixie National. To say I (we) have cattle in our lives would be a gigantic understatement but also one of the biggest Blessings in our lives.

Hmmmm...

A New Year...and it has started, I've seen all the resolutions and comments about resolutions and all that comes with a New Year. As I stated last year at this time....(can you believe I've had this darn blog for a year??) I am resolving to not have a resolution...kinda....sorta.....ok, so you decide...
My kinda, sorta, semi-resolution is about my blog and is this: Should I stay or should I go?!?!?!?!?!?

I enjoy rambling and sharing with y'al but I've been horrible at it for oh, about the last 6 months..which isn't good considering, as stated above, I've only been blogging for about a year.... :) I think I'm the same way with staying in contact with people at times...YES,please insert a sad face here.

So here's what I'm thinking....I NEED to know if y'all are still out there reading!! If so, and please don't make me beg like I've done so many times before...hahahaha......let me know you're there. Leave a comment, letting me know that you'll die without my blog and that you're going to start sharing it with every random stranger you come in contact with. AND then that you will beg those strangers and your friends to read and share with their friends!! That's how it works...keep on passing it on!

Ok, so I'm not just writing this blog for y'all to listen to me ramble..I"m writing it just as much so I'm not the only one listening to me ramble....and lookin' like a crazy lady having all these conversation by myself...There---I said it, I'm a crazy rambling lady!!

So let me know below in the comment section.........Should I stay or should I go?!?!?!?!?!?

p.s. Hope y'all had a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy Happy New Year!!

SoLo cup

I'm finally up with the times and have heard Red Solo Cup by Toby Keith..........and let me just sum it up for you in two words...............Not Impressed! Not just not impressed but almost in shock that it even qualifies as a song and even more so that they spent time and money to make a video...now i haven't seen the video but let me sum it up for you again through a recent text messaging conversation with mi padre:

me: "I think he was deep into a red solo cup when he agreed to do that one."
mi padre: "Wait 'til you see the video looks like he was."

Enough said..........

If you haven't heard the song or seen the video, google it now...........then.............give your two cents..........

Holidays.....

I have a confession.............. I am READY to shop!!!!! I think I've told you before but I absolutely LOVE Christmas time.........With halloween over and Thanksgiving fastly approaching I have a huge itch to break out the Christmas decorations, tree, lights, start dwindling down the Christmas list, fighting the crowds, all of it.

I am doing my best to refrain from doing this for at least approximately 2 more weeks. Then.............it's on!!! I have so many ideas that I'm afraid I won't get to any of them (being as how my kitchen painting project still isn't done). Pinterest is an amazing place for decorating ideas! If only I could find the balance between playing on pinterest and starting all the holiday decorations crafts I've found.

So, what's your favorite holiday??? Any special or unique decorating ideas for this Christmas or Thanksgiving??

Maybe next time

Well...I hate to break it to y'all BUT no big horns over the weekend.....not even one without horns.....It was a fun weekend with the hubby but my1st deer (hopefully with big horns) will have to wait a few more weeks.

I guess I will have to admit one thing to y'all......................I did take a shot at one but it was a miss....big bust!! I guess the excitement and nerves got me......BUT they won't next time :) :)

On the homefront I'm in the process of painting the kitchen. Which is a project I started a week ago last friday. So my kitchen now has light brown/tan walls compared to the weird lime green that was there, but only about half the cabinet doors are up. The other half have one coat of paint on one side. SO I guess my evenings this week will be filled with removing cabinet doors and hardware, sanding and painting.....wish me luck.....and my husband patience because I think he's ready to have our kitchen back to normal.

crafty, crafty

The creative juices are flowing today! Well....maybe....I've been trying to write this blog post for about half an hour and I'm not getting too far. SO........in honor of the fact that:
1. I completed an actual craft project this evening
2. I can't get my brain to function well enough to write

I'm going to keep this post simple....if I can do simple.. :)

First off, I want you to check out one of my favorite blogs: The Lettered Cottage.  Layla blogged today about Pinterest and a craft project she took on in honor of their Craft Challenge. Layla's craft project was inspired by  Brooke's post over at www.pureandnoble.blogspot.com

Well I've been in need of something not too tall, cute, and bright yellow for the windowsill above our kitchen sink.......and well......I saw Layla's blog today and BAM!!!!!!!!!!!! My not too tall, cute and bright yellow something was forming in my imagination....Now, if you checked out the above blogs you already know where I'm going with this...BUT since most of you probably didn't, let me share with you my craft project from this evening.....

Supplies needed: hot glue gun, jars, primer, spray paint

I started with this: (if you look close enough, you can see that the hot glue gun was already used on some of the jars)

Next came the primer

Then the paint (followed by a coat of clear gloss) and you have the final product!!!!!!!

My hot glue gun skills could use
some work but the end product doesn't look too shabby......

Here's  a sneak peek at the windowsill now........

Let me know what you think...OR fun projects you've been doing!!

Finally!!!!!!

After the past few weeks/months of constant, go.....go.....go.....go.....  My husband and I have recently had the chance to watch a few new movies!!! Before you get too excited they weren't any that I was hoping for in a previous post BUT....they were good!!

One of them was the 4th in the Fast and Furious series............we have been wanting to see this one so we
could watch the newest one..Fast Five...

The 4th one...Fast and Furious....well...it...had....... me....HOOKED....within the first 5 minutes!! I'm sad that we didn't see this one as soon as it came out....we have been missing out on one good movie...of course.. as soon as the credits started rolling..I was on my blackberry googling when the fifth one would be out on DVD............and then I got sad......really sad.......because now we have to wait a little bit longer to see it....

So if you're looking for a good movie..and one that will keep you on the edge of your seat......watch Fast and Furious (of course it'll help if you watch the first 3 before)........................

I'm still here.............

Well I haven't fallen off the face of the earth but....I do feel like we've been to the end of the earth and back a few dozen times in the last couple of months! What a life of wonderfully amazing chaos it has been :)

Hope you haven't missed me too much but I do hope you missed me just a little bit!! Life has been good and crazy for my husband and I lately and are so fortunate to be blessed with such amazing friends and family. They have all been there to help us and to celebrate with us. I hope you all know how much  you mean to us and how much WE LOVE YOU!!

Schedules in our world have a little more routine now (I think, or at least I hope) so you'll be getting more of my randomness a little more frequently now! Thanks for sticking around and don't forget to share my randomness with your friends :) :)

New Beginnings.......................

As many parts of our Country are dealing with the crazy weather that Spring can sometimes bring or the aftermath of the crazy weather the town that I live in is cleaning up after and recovering from a tornado. The tornado we experienced was one of the first ones to touch the ground before (excuse my language ahead of time) all hell broke loose in Alabama 2 weeks ago.

I thought all my life that I grew up in tornado alley in the land of Oz BUT..............never have I seen in person until 2 weeks ago just exactly the physical and emotional damage and stress a tornado can cause to people and a town! With that being said, I've also witnessed just how big hearted and caring the people of this town, state, and country are!! I have witnessed a town come together to help out friends and strangers AND watched as people generously and whole heartedly donated items, money, time and help to anyone who was in need of any of it.

I was told recently that when something like this happens it will bond a town and the citizens of it forever. As I drive through town now the truth of that statement hits home. This spring will be one that will not be forgotten and will be remembered as the spring that bonded a community!!

Pre-Viewing Review

Okay guys, this is the 1st go at the movie review/book reports! As I said before "ain't gonna be no regular report"!!!!! So glad my parents sent me to school/college! English classes done paid off real good!! :)

So this one is actually going to be a pre-viewing report (as so stated in title). My husband and I are patiently waiting for a handful of movies that are set to come out just about any day now. There are so many on the list that quite frankly I don't know when I'm gonna have time to see all of them between the packing that I should be doing and the moving that we will soon be doing...Oh, the priorities!!!

Drum roll please...................................................................................................
our movie list (in no particular order)

..............Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides

...............Fast Five (need to see the 4th one first though)

...............The Smurfs

...............Kung Fu Panda 2

..................................YES!!! we like animated kids films!!!!!

Crossing fingers now that we get to see a couple of them soon!! THEN maybe a little after viewing review!!!!

Danger in the bathroom..............

I am not much of a morning person...I'll admit it...I don't like to get up and I don't like to be messed with in the mornings..... Since also means that most mornings I am running LATE!!!!My husband tells me it sounds like I'm constantly running through the house. I try to explain that I am just walking fast and my footsteps are heavy...hmmmmmm...maybe I should try running...then I could get a workout in at the same time...I'm gonna have to give that a little more thought :)

So this morning I'm rushing around and get to the part of my daily routine where I fight with my blowdryer... Until this morning I thought I was fighting with the electrical outlet....where I also have a small fan plugged in and normally running...so the process begins as usual....turn on fan- plug in blow dryer- try to turn on blow-dryer- have to hit red test button (or whatever it is) on blowdryer plug in.... blow dryer turns on....then turns off...so the blow dryer and I have this vicious cycle going..finally I think I've got it beat and start blow drying my hair...

WooHoo I'd won....gonna be a great monday..............until............the blowdryer makes a random weird noise and I see sparks (via the mirror) shoot across the cabinet into the sink and my hand towel....what do I do....I yell...I yell profanities...because the only thing I could think of was "is my hair on fire?" "is the towel gonna catch on fire?"........ and of course my yelling of profanities wakes up my husband and I proceed to tell him my blowdryer was shooting sparks...real sparks!!!

My husbands response....yeah I think that things' been going out for a while..........

Thank goodness I kept my old blowdryer...Never know when you're gonna need an extra one!!!!

p.s. I'm also glad to know it's not the electrical outlet that I was fighting.... :)

.....oh yeah....that.....

Well for those of you that don't know me very well....i am a....PROCRASTINATOR!!! Yes, I said it! I procrastinate......I try my hardest not to, but there are some days that it gets the best of me...I recently told a friend that it wouldn't be so bad except.....I married a procrastinator!! So I don't think he's near as bad as I am..but when you get two procrastinators together, and well...they procrastinate......it's never good......

As I speak I am doing oh I don't know.....the start of about 17 loads of laundry!! If you're a smart person you're asking how in the world I have 17 loads of laundry...well I'm going to be completely honest....besides the fact that I went on a laundry strike (I didn't realize I had gone on strike until the dirty laundry started over taking my laundry room) and well the fact that 99% of my husbands clothes go to the cleaners, and we have no kids....I still don't really have an answer to this simple question!!

I can state that for about the last 4 days I've done nothing but wash loads of bedsheets and towels....the hubby came down with poison ivy (thank goodness I'm not allergic to it), and so towels and bedsheets have been a daily routine lately.....can I blame my non-laundry doing days on that???????

Oh well now that I've got all that said let me get back to my beginning point....I've been procrastinating on getting any book/movie reviews up here. I've read a couple good books lately and movies are always on our to do list..so I ask myself "where are the reviews?"......answer-I'm a procastinator....

Second half to that answer.....who likes doing book reports???? I mean, really??? As I was reprimanding myself the other day for slacking on not putting one on here I thought, why in the world did I want to start reviews on my blog???? I remember back in school how I loved to read a good book but HATED to do a report on it... and now here I am, years and years and years later writing a blog that I myself have COMPLETE AND UTTER CONTROL OVER and I choose to write random book reports!!!!

I believe I may have officially lost what marbles I have left.......okay, so I am going to start a section with movies and books I've recently watched or read. I also promise to give you some reviews of them but I also promise they will be nothing like your typical book report!!!! I just can't do......even if I tried, it wouldn't happen...remember???? I'm a procrastinator...!!

p.s. experienced my 1st turkey hunting experience this weekend

p.s.s. hubby also bought me my own shotgun..

p.s.s.s. i'm very proud of my shotgun....it was a very long process in finding one for me

p.s.s.s.s. most gun companies don't make left handed shotguns

p.s.s.s.s.s i'm left handed

p.s.s.s.s.s.s more on the turkey hunting and shotgun later.....maybe............

Is it that time yet????..........

Oh my.....has spring finally arrived??? I'm hoping that it has!! The weather has been pretty consistent and the thunderstorms have been rolling through. I do believe the thunderstorms are one of my favorite things about spring time.

I can say that the mornings around here have been rather chilly lately but the afternoons have been amazing!!! Part of this is due to the fact that the wind has actually been blowing here. You see, 90 degrees is so much easier to handle when the wind is blowing... add almost 100% humidity in the summer time and I promise you'll be jumping for joy when the wind is barely blowing and even more so when it blows 100 mph!!!  It didn't take me too long after moving here to realize that- the wind NEVER blows...okay, so never say never, right??? It does blow here but it's not very often and when it does no one knows what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It feels like Spring has Sprung here and I couldn't be more excited! Did I mention how much I  like the smell of fresh cut grass???? Or evenings spent grilling out?? Or just sitting out on the porch in the evenings??? I could go on forever about all the things that make me love Spring time!!! What is it that you love about Spring time???????

Hope you're all enjoying the weather!!!! :) :) :) :)

Full Speed Ahead.....................

The weather here is BEAUTIFUL!! Now mind you, it's been like 32 degrees in the mornings but the temp has been inching it's way up during the day to make for some awesome weather! I was outside earlier playing with the puppies. Yes, the aussie's I introduced you to a few weeks ago. They are loving the weather. It makes it so much better for them when they get in the pond!! Or when Milsap falls into the pond....

I was in the front yard watching them play and run and became mesmerized at how amazingly beautiful they are. Both of them with their semi-thick winter coats still. They both have such different colored coats but are both beautiful!! Now don't get me wrong, they are pains in my ______, most of the time but I still love them!!

Milsap had troubles when we 1st move learning his way around the new place. BUT now he knows where the driveway is, the grass, the house, the dogpen, where we park the vehicles and where all the barbed wire fence is!! Needless to say he now knows how to PROPERLY make his way through a barbed wire fence...I'm pretty sure this was a hard lesson to learn but also one of those "I'll only make that mistake once" lesson!!! OH and it's definitely not one you can teach a blind dog. When he's uncomfortable he FREAKS out,so you just gotta let him learn on his own!!

Oh, yes I'm rambling...back to my point....I am completely AMAZED!!!! when I see Milsap running full speed down our driveway. It makes me so happy to know that he's that comfortable and has adapted that well. That is until I forget to get out of his way and he completely plows me over! And let me just tell ya, he's a strong boy at full speed!! Unfortunately that is not a lesson that I've learned just once. However, I do try to stay out of his way BUT his being blind sometimes forces him to not run in a straight line so.....even when I think I'm gettiing out of the way.....there he is, plowing me over AGAIN!!!!

Maybe one of these days, when I get real handy with my new camera I'll get some good action pictures of him at full speed. Until then....guess you'll just have to use your imagination :)

On Bended Knees.......

I've found myself praying almost non-stop the last couple of weeks. We've had some friends experience an unimaginable loss. I seem to find myself frowning and tearing up as I think about it and then without realizing I'm praying for them. Praying for comfort and peace for them from God. Praying that they help each other through this and that through God and with time their Hearts will be healed. Even as I write this I find myself praying for them and hoping that with each passing day things get easier for them and that the few, precious memories they have will never fade.

It's while saying these prayers that I realize just how trivial some things in life truly are. It's the friends, the emotions, the relationships, the family, the Prayer, the FAITH that is important............

Prayer is a powerful thing AND answered in so many ways, some of which we will never understand. I ask today and tomorrow and the next day that when you go to the Lord for your daily chat please pray for my friends, their family and all their broken hearts.

-Sooner Family...............your Cowboy Family loves you and is still on bended knees........
